Whenever we visit cafes or restaurants my girl’s favourite drink order is Feijoa juice, I love how delicious and pulpy the juice is and it’s always consistent in flavour. Since it is currently feijoa season I decided to test it out and see how easy the Feijoa juice would be to make!
This Feijoa Juice recipe doesn’t disappoint, I think it’s just as good as the cafes!
To make this feijoa juice you will start by making a simple sugar syrup then blend the peeled feijoas, you will need a blender or food processor for this recipe. If you own a Thermomix this Sugar Syrup is perfect for this Feijoa Juice recipe.
The sugar syrup keeps for ages in the fridge as a great base for many drink flavours and cocktails. I like to keep the sugar syrup in the fridge and blitz up the feijoas on the day of serving. Combine the sugar syrup and blitzed feijoas with ice to serve as a delicious autumn drink!
This recipe makes up 2 litres of Feijoa juice that lasts 1-2 days in the fridge, in our home it usually gets demolished in one day!
What are Feijoas?
I love to call Feijoa’s healthy Easter Eggs as they are always in season at Easter time (often Easter Chocolate Egg hunts are around Feijoa trees) in New Zealand which is our Autumn (Fall) time, It is a sign of transition into cooler weather.
Feijoa’s are a green skin fruit with firm skin that you either peel or cut the fruit in half and scoop out the white insides. Feijoa trees are very common in New Zealand backyards and are best eaten once they have fallen off the tree. We have about 14 trees in a few different varieties, you notice the difference in the skin softness and shape between the varieties.
Feijoas are native to the highlands of southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, Uruguay, and northern Argentina. I personally think the flavour is quite unusual and find it difficult to describe as it’s unlike anything else. It is a juicy but quite fleshy fruit and small in size. The Feijoa tree is part of the Myrtle family and Feijoa’s are often called pineapple guava, I think they taste more like banana guava.
I would love to hear how you would describe a Feijoa in the comments below…
