The first time I saw the viral Tunacado Sandwich pop up on my Instagram I knew it would be the kind of sandwich I would run out to try! Sadly we can’t purchase Tunacado’s in New Zealand which means I have to create my own version at home!
What is a Tunacado Sandwich?
The viral Tunacado Sandwich originated from Joe & the Juice which has stores around the world from Korea to Dubai, Iceland and the US. The Tunacado sandwich consists of Avocado, Joe’s Classic thin Bread, Tomato, Tuna Mousse, and Vegan Pesto. My copycat Tunacado Sandwich has a Cheesy twist and isn’t technically the same sandwich, it’s my take on a Tunacado sandwich.
What’s in the Tunacado Sandwich?
Because of preference and accessibility here are some of the sandwich adaptations I made for this recipe: I couldn’t source any bread like the flatbread Joe & the Juices uses so I have used sliced sourdough bread, I’m not a fan of basil pesto so I have missed this ingredient out, please feel free to add pesto in if it’s your cup of tea. When I created this recipe I didn’t have any tomatoes but I think slices of tomato would be really yummy added to the sandwich.
In this viral Tunacado Sandwich, I focussed mostly on the ‘Tuna Mousse‘ (I love this terminology) by smashing the avocado and incorporating it with the Tuna, Cream Cheese, Cheese, Red Onion and Mustard to create a thick whipped consistency. My mouth is just salivating typing this out! I have used a sliced sourdough bread but I think a focaccia toasted would be the perfect bread to use for the sandwich.
Food Prep
You can also have the Tuna Mousse pre-prepared in the fridge to last 5 days just make sure you don’t add the avocado into the mousse until serving. To prepare on the day you just need to assemble the sandwich and toast it in a sandwich pressed or on a fry pan.
